breezy porticos

Interview from 6 March 02

Breezy Porticos!

Corey: What's the music scene like in Denver?

Andy: Despite a lack of all-ages venues (there's only one place that I know of), Denver's got a pretty good scene. Can't-miss local bands include Dressy Bessy, the Maybellines, Perry Weissman 3 and of course the Apples. More and more decent out-of-town bands are playing here all the time, but unfortunately, most of the shows are 21+. However, the local college radio station KVCU in Boulder has made a tremendous difference in raising the profile of local music.

What is both your favourite and least favourite thing about Denver?

I like the fact that Denver's sort of geographically isolated and therefore a little bit sleepy and backwards, which has its charms. Of course this can be a detriment as well, but as long as I can get out of town on a regular basis (and good bands continue to play here!) it doesn't really bother me. The distance between Denver and other major cities is certainly a drawback at times, though.

And just how did the Breezy Porticos start?

My friend Eric and I were in-between bands in the spring of '99 so were started playing together, sort of trying out songs. Another friend, Jody, who I'd played with in Sissy Fuzz, joined us and we soon realized we had a band! We played our first show in April '99.

Have you any new recordings due out?

We have a couple of songs that will appear on the upcoming (summer) Quien? and Baka-Poi fanzine compilations. Besides that, we're hoping to release a full-length later on this year.

What is the most memorable show you have played?

I'd have to say one of our most memorable shows was the Halloween party we played in our friends' basement. We dressed up as the Monday Night Football crew from the '70's, yellow leisure suits and all (I was Dandy Don Meredith). We were quite a sight playing Interstellar Overdrive in those hot suits! Syd would've loved it.

What are your future plans?

We'd like to release a full-length and certainly tour farther afield than we have thus far (hopefully go to the West Coast and further into the Midwest, perhaps the East Coast?).

What else keeps you busy and/or entertained?

I like to read a lot but most of my time lately has been taken up (happily) by a new puppy I just got! Of course I'm always on the hunt for the next "thrift score", too!
